Choosing Cotton Swabs

The choice of cotton swabs depends primarily on their intended use; requirements regarding materials and sterility differ significantly between routine cleaning and medical care. For household use where cost-effectiveness is a priority, brands like Chahua are suitable; however, for infant care or wound treatment, it is recommended to select products certified as "medical-grade sterile."

1. The vast majority of cotton swabs sold in supermarkets have not undergone sterilization and are suitable for general cleaning tasks, such as applying makeup. For treating wounds, it is best to use sterile cotton swabs-such as those provided by hospitals or purchased from pharmacies.

2. Among sterile cotton swabs, one type is wrapped in yellow paper; these have been sterilized using high-temperature, high-pressure methods and typically have a shelf life of two weeks if left unopened. In humid southern climates, the paper packaging is prone to moisture absorption, which may shorten the shelf life to around one week. Another type is sterilized using ethylene oxide gas and sealed in plastic bags or boxes; these have a shelf life of approximately two to three years.
